Your Facebook community needs to continue growing Likes but instead of incentivizing visitors to like your page you “MUST” upgrade your strategy!!
Facebook recently updated some features for their developer API and SDK’s. At the bottom of the updated release, they included the removal of the “Fangating” or “Likegating” feature which incentivized visitors to like your page.
Here is an excerpt taken from a developer’s blog post:
You must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page.
It remains acceptable to incentivize people to login to your app, checkin at a place or enter a promotion on your app’s Page. To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike.
What does this mean?
Basically, Facebook says that this upgrade will improve the experience for both users (they will see content they actually want to see) and advertisers (targeting by interests is more effective).
Creating and nurturing quality engagement between you and your community is by far the quickest way to grow your community to paying customers. Don’t get caught up in utilizing likes alone as your verification that your Facebook page is working.
Yes, likes allow your brand’s content to be seen in your fans/followers news feed but a true fan/follower is the only one that really cares to see your post anyways.
Many people have been asking, “how will we get people to Like our page”…. Here’s a few strategies that will keep the likes coming:
- Develop A Content Strategy…
Make your page hard to resist! Figure out what problem you solve for your community and what they engage with that you share with them. Build your page to encourage likes and engagement. Remember high quality posts + exciting promotions = more interaction.
- Contests & Giveaways with Relevant Prizes…
Create excitement! Get better quality likes by offering a prize that is fun & targets the audience you want for your page. Don’t be random. (whitepapers, coupons, etc…)
- Use your Email lists…
Invite your business’ email list to like your social media pages. Encourage them by telling them why they should like your page. Gain their trust by being real and keep it simple by being short and to the point.
- Don’t buy likes, you lose your authenticity
You might “help” your page “look” good, but getting people who do not know your product or services really won’t benefit you at all and will most likely hurt you in the end. Don’t waste your money.
- Facebook Ads are OK
Instead of trying to buy likes, Facebook advertising allows you to gain other people’s interest including your competitors’ customers. Create ads that are relevant and will reach the right audience. Promote your contests within your ad that apply to your community whom genuinely want to interact with your page/business.
Building your brand and growing your likes on Facebook by growing awareness, engaging your fans, and collecting leads you are now able to continue bringing in people that you definitely trust and rely on for valuable information.
